Tom was rapidly becoming a close friend and mentor. He knew a lot about fighting, but he also knew a lot about living and parenting, and he used that second skill-set to teach me about the first. Tom was fun, often getting into trouble with his daughter Minna for pranks I helped him pull, when we had time to set them up. We were joined in that by his younger daughter, Dusk, a brown and black vampire girl who was sneaky and tricky and very much against any set of rules. Dusk rapidly became a close friend of mine as well, and made sure I laughed at least once every day. She said it was good for me, when I was busy trying to take everything so seriously, to remember how to laugh, a thought that Tom thoroughly approved. I often thought that Tom and Dusk and Pandora helped me hold onto both my sanity and my humanity through all the hard work of preparing for war.
